Keep the Sabbath Day Holy
This time, let's study about keeping the Sabbath day holy.
God's people must follow the words of God absolutely.
What if we add to the words of God or take away from them?
Let's find out through the Bible.
Rev 22:18-19 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book. If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy. God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
If anyone adds to the Bible, God will add to him the plagues.
And if anyone takes away from the Bible, he cannot enter the kingdom of heaven.
So, we must not add to God's words or take away from them.
Today, let's study about the Sabbath day.
Ge 2:1-3 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing, so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
God blessed the seventh day and made it holy.
So the seventh day sabbath is the holy worship day.
Ex 20:8-10 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God..."
The seventh day Sabbath is God's commandment.
God commanded us to remember this day by keeping it holy.
If anyone takes away the Sabbath or adds something different, he cannot be saved.
Then, what day is the seventh day Sabbath?
First, let's look into the dictionary.
What day is Sunday in the dictionary?
(The first day)
What day is Saturday, then?
(The seventh day)
Therefore, the seventh day Sabbath is Saturday.
Second, let's look at a calendar.
What day is the first day on a calendar?
(sunday)
What day is the seventh day on a calendar?
(Saturday)
Therefore, the seventh day Sabbath is Saturday.
Both dictionary and calendar say that the seventh day is Saturday.
The Biblical Sabbath is Saturday.
Third, let's look at a Catholic book, "The Faith of Our Fathers."
"Not to mention other examples, is not every Christian obliged to sanctify Sunday and to abstain on that day from unnecessary servile work? Is not the observance of this law among the most prominent of our sacred duties? But you may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday. The Scriptures enforce the religious observance of Saturday, a day which we never sanctify."
-The Faith of our Fathers, pp. 72-73
The Catholic Church keeps Sunday.
However, even the Catholic Church testifies that the Sabbath is Saturday.
Sunday is not the Biblical Sabbath.
The Biblical Sabbath is Saturday.
Then, how important is the Sabbath to us?
Ex 31:13 "Say to the Israelites, 'You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy.'"
The Sabbath is a sign between God and His people.
Therefore, God's people must keep the Sabbath.
What if we do not keep the Sabbath?
Let's find the answer through the Old Testament first.
Ex 31:14 "Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it must be put to death, whoever does any work on that day must be cut off from his people."
In the Old Testament times, those who did not keep the Sabbath were put to death.
(Nu 15:32-36)
Then, how about in the New Testament times?
Some say that the Sabbath was abolished in the New Testament times.
Are they right?
Jesus Himself set and example of keeping the truth.
Did Jesus keep the Sabbath or not?
Lk 4:16 He went to nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read.
The Sabbath is Jesus' custom.
Custom means a ceremony that is conducted regularly.
Jesus set an example of keeping the Sabbath.
Some say that the Sabbath was abolished after the Crucifixion.
Are they right?
Let's study the acts of the apostles after the Crucifixion.
Ac 17:2-3 As his custom was, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and proving that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. "This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ," he said.
Apostle Paul kept the Sabbath even after the Crucifixion.
So, it is Wrong that the Sabbath day was abolished after the Crucifixion.
And the New Testament was recorded after the Crucifixion.
The New Testament never says that we should keep Sunday instead of the Sabbath.
The Bible commands us to keep the Sabbath until the end of the age.(Mt 24:20)
Jesus and His disciples set and example of keeping the Sabbath.
What if we do not keep the Sabbath?
Mt 7:21-23 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord', will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven."
The purpose of our faith is to enter the kingdom of heaven.
According to the Bible, who can enter the kingdom of heaven?
(He who does the will of God can)
Which is God's will, Sunday or the Sabbath?
(The Sabbath)
God's will is to keep the Sabbath.
Unless we keep the Sabbath, we can never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Let's all keep the Sabbath and enter the kingdom of heaven.
